Why am I drinking when I don’t want to?
You might have felt this as an unexplained resistance. When it decides something is good for us – it generates a craving. This is basically a milder form of the stress response coupled with a spurt of dopamine – the motivation chemical – to get us to take action.
We typically feel that boredom is a negative emotion, but, like all emotions, boredom is merely information, a sort of red flag from the less articulate parts of our brain. Your boredom may be trying to tell you something important. Why is it your usual ways of occupying yourself are suddenly inadequate? drinking because of boredom Is it perhaps time to reevaluate your priorities or reconsider whether your actions are in line with your values? And we usually drink at the first hint of being bored. If you have kids, you know that your kids always say, I’m bored, there’s nothing to do. And it’s usually after they’ve been watching the iPad for way too long. And you say to them, there’s a whole world outside, go to the trampoline. But you know what, and you’re so frustrated, because you’re like, it’s not boring.
Drinking because of boredom happens because home is where we feel safe, unjudged – it’s where we can relax. But at home, it’s easy to get a bit too comfortable… you can get a long way down a bottle when you are sitting in front of the TV half-watching some series to pass the time. If you want to reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, it makes sense to avoid busy bars and thirsty friends. But many of us should because millions of us resort to drinking out of boredom whilst relaxing at home. While alcohol abuse is common, it doesn’t mean you have to face it alone. Downplaying the seriousness of alcohol misuse and addiction can have impactful ramifications.
